Openness: one of the pillars of CORU (Care, Openness, Respect, Understanding)
Openness is a cornerstone of trust, understanding, and meaningful human interaction. It requires transparency, honesty, and a willingness to share one’s thoughts and feelings without unnecessary secrecy or concealment. By embracing openness, individuals avoid the gnawing pains of loneliness and regret while fostering deeper connections with others. This concept is more than just a personal virtue; it is a tool for building trust and strengthening relationships in every aspect of life.
The Power of Transparency
When people are open and transparent, they naturally avoid cheating, lying, and deceptive practices. Openness eliminates the barriers that prevent true connection and allows for trust to flourish. Trust, after all, is the foundation of all healthy relationships. Without it, misunderstandings and doubts creep in, eroding the fabric of communication and mutual respect.
Openness begins with the courage to believe that your voice matters. Do not assume that your opinions are invalid or that your words will go unheard. Speak with respect, confidence, and authenticity. At the same time, being open does not equate to being reckless with your words. It requires a balance—speaking frankly while remaining considerate of others’ feelings.
Listening: The Companion of Openness
Openness is not merely about sharing; it is equally about listening. To understand others, one must listen to both sides of a story before drawing conclusions. Active listening helps foster empathy, allowing for a deeper understanding of differing perspectives. This openness to hearing others’ viewpoints is the first step toward meaningful dialogue and resolution.
Communication is a two-way street, and approaching conversations with an open attitude ensures that no one feels ignored or dismissed. Even simple gestures like a smile or a friendly wave can invite openness and ease in interactions. These seemingly small acts can break down walls, making it easier for others to share their thoughts and feelings.
The Role of Communication in Relationships
The importance of openness in communication cannot be overstated. As humans, we are designed to connect through our senses—through touch, gesture, spoken words, or written expressions. Silence, though sometimes golden, is not always a productive path to building relationships. As Job 13:5 advises, silence can be wise in certain contexts, but life and relationships require engagement.
Communication is the bridge that connects individuals. Without it, misunderstandings and assumptions take over, leading to unnecessary conflict or emotional distance. Never assume that someone already knows how you feel. A simple “hello” or a heartfelt gesture can open the door to meaningful conversation. A handshake, a fist bump, or even a smile can convey warmth and invite trust.
Openness with Prudence
Openness, however, does not mean expressing every opinion without consideration. While transparency is essential, it must be tempered with care and sensitivity toward others. Before sharing, take a moment to consider the impact of your words. Openness works best when it is coupled with respect, empathy, and an understanding of the emotional context.
This does not mean avoiding uncomfortable truths. Sometimes, being open involves saying difficult things. However, such communication must always be approached with prudence. When facts need to be shared, lay them out with honesty and tact. The goal is not to hurt but to enlighten, clarify, and build trust.
Openness: A Lifelong Practice
Openness is a practice that requires continual effort and mindfulness. It calls for consistent self-awareness and a commitment to engage with others authentically and respectfully. Start small—a kind word, an honest conversation, or a simple gesture of goodwill. Over time, these small acts of openness can transform relationships and build a culture of trust and understanding.
By embracing openness, you invite others to do the same. The world thrives on connection, and connection thrives on openness. Whether through words, actions, or silent gestures of kindness, openness has the power to bring people closer, foster trust, and build lasting, meaningful relationships. So open up—communicate, listen, and connect. The rewards of openness are immeasurable.

Living is not a RACE. There is no such thing as a “head start” to Live, Love, Learn, Teach, Share and be happy. Opportunities in life are not found in a linear path. Opportunities are all around us. You can be way behind and still get the best opportunity in life. Learn from the experiences of others. Learn the lessons of history and not just the events. Do not blame the past for where you are still standing. Move on and improve. We are humans. We have the freedom of Choice. Choose to communicate, choose to improve, choose to be part of someone, choose to accept people’s kindness. Choose to learn from history to be better and not bitter.
