Corporate social responsibility

I learned about corporate social responsibility in the library of the school I went to, Ateneo de Zamboanga. CSR was not part of the curriculum. It was not even discussed in the classroom. This was back in 1970.

I learned that corporations or businesses must be responsible just as individuals are.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Definition: A company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates.Companies express this citizenship

  • Through their waste and pollution reduction processes
  • By contributing educational and social programs
  • By earning adequate returns on the employed resources

All over the world CSR is at the embryo stage.
Most corporations are still using the common denominator of “what’s in it for me” before doing anything about CSR. There are many individual citizens who are philanthropists (time or money) but this is not CSR.
